Tom Sunderland, ASLA
BA- History and Geography/
Master of Landscape Architecture
Title: President/Landscape
Architect/Project Manager
After earning of BA in History
and Geography from the University of Colorado-Boulder,
Tom worked as a landscaper for various companies
in and around Boulder. From 1998-2001 Tom earned
a Master of Landscape Architecture degree from
the University of Colorado-Denver while owning
and operating his own small landscape company,
“Sunderland Alpine Landscape Services”. Tom’s
studies at UCD included a 6 week study abroad
in Paris. After earning his LA degree Tom worked
for a short period at the Landscape Architecture
and Community Planning firm, Design Concepts.
In the Fall of 2001, Tom left to get back into
the design/build arena and founded Native Edge
Associates Inc. with co-founder Jason Griffith.
When not at work, Tom enjoys
mountain biking, telemark skiing, photography,
playing guitar and mandolin, camping and traveling,
and spending time with his wife and two kids.
He gains much of his inspiration for the creation
of landscapes from his travels and enjoyment of
the outdoors. Travel highlights and experiences
include many adventures in Utah’s Canyonlands,
Colrado’s wilderness, Europe, and the jungles
of Belize and Costa Rica.
Jason Griffith
LA-Economics/ Certified
Colorado Gardener
Title: Vice President/
Operations Officer/ Project Manager
Jason graduated with a BA in
Economics from Hanover College in 1992. After
moving to Colorado in 1994 Jason became interested
in landscape and horticulture and earned his Colorado
Master Gardners certificate. While owning and
operating his own landscape company, Peaceful
Gardens, Jason worked on a variety of residential
and commercial projects in and around Boulder
County. In 2001 Jason found himself working on
a large high end residential project along with
Tom Sunderland, a fellow subcontractor on the
job. It was after this project that Jason joined
with Tom to form Native Edge Associates Inc. Today,
Jason is primarily responsible for construction
personnel, job scheduling, equipment purchasing,
quality control, and project management.
John Clemmons
BFA in Painting
Title: Project Manager
While completing his BFA in
painting, John began working in the landscape
field in Western Michigan in 2000. He quickly
realized that his creative mind could be applied
to the principles of landscaping and fed the urge
to turn projects into artwork. While John has
well rounded knowledge and experience in all aspects
of landscape construction, his specialties include
boulder placement (visualizing where each boulder
fits naturally into the landscape), carpentry,
and masonry. While creativity drives much of what
he enjoys doing, John has gained valuable experience
in estimating and design work here at Native Edge.
In his free time, John enjoys painting, snowboarding,
hiking, camping, and has a strong love of travel.
Elizabeth Ochsner
BA in History/ Master
of Landscape Architecture
Title: Landscape Architect/
Project Manager
In 1997, after earning a BA
in History from Vanderbilt University, Elizabeth
moved to Colorado and earned a Master of Landscape
Architecture Degree from the University of Colorado-Denver.
From there she began working at Design Concepts
in Lafayette. As an Associate at Design Concepts,
Elizabeth led teams through project design and
construction documents for a number of large projects.
She left Design Concepts in 2005 and began working
for Native Edge Associates in 2006. Since joining
Native Edge, Elizabeth has demonstrated her ability
to successfully design and manage a diverse range
of projects including residential historical landmarks,
mountain estates, and multi-family residential.
Margo Sizemore
Title: Office Manager
Margo moved to Colorado from
Omaha Nebraska in 1993. Margo is responsible for
successfully managing the office operations of
the company. Her responsibilities include AP /
AR, payroll and various administrative and secretarial
tasks. Margo makes it possible for other people
to function efficiently.
Leonardo Lucani
Title: Site Supervisor/Yard
and Equipment Manager
From the Tuscany region of Italy,
Leo moved to the Boulder area in 2005. While growing
up in Tuscany Leo gained a variety of experience
working on vineyards and country villa estates.
After joining Native Edge in 2005 as a laborer,
Leo quickly proved his potential to be much more.
Leo is a quick learner and cares about the details.
Leo strong work ethic combined with his gentle
demeanor and attention to detail has gained him
a high level of respect from construction crews,
company management, and project owners. Albeit
with a strong Italian accent, Leo’s ability to
communicate effectively has led to one successful
project after another.
Drew McGrail
Title: Project Foreman
Drew originally hails from Missouri,
where he gained his first exposure to the landscaping
industry working for a local nursery. Drew has
multiple years experience in the foreman capacity,
feeding off his desire to constantly expand his
base of knowledge and installation skills. Drew
loves a good challenge and is very comfortable
communicating with clients and transforming designs
into built projects. In his spare time, Drew enjoys
playing music with his wife and creating custom
pottery. In the winter of 2005/2006, Drew spent
3 months in New Orleans where he assisted with
Katrina relief efforts.
Tony Velasquez
Title: Irrigation and
Lighting Specialist
Tony is one of the true Colorado
natives. Born in Trinidad, Tonys’ love for Colorado
kept him close to home. Over the past 28 years,
Tony has gained much experience in the fields
of landscape irrigation and lighting. He has multiple
certifications in both irrigation and lighting,
allowing him to quickly diagnose existing problems
and execute precise layouts. Tonys’ years of experience
bring a high level of quality control and professionalism,
making him a vital addition to Native Edge Associates.
You might have noticed Tony before at a Rockies
or Broncos game. He works for both teams in his
spare time, helping out with security and insuring
everyone has a good time.
Thomas
Wilkes
Title: Property Maintenance
and Estimating
Thomas
is primarily responsible for follow up and ongoing
care of our customers built projects. He also
estimates and project manages some of our smaller
projects. His responsibilities include maintenance
and small project estimating, development of personalized
maintenance and property care programs, and warrantee
inspections and evaluations. Thomas grew up in
Little Rock Arkansas and then spent 14 years living
on the Big Island (Hawaii). After moving to Boulder
in 2002, Thomas gained experience in the fields
of landscape maintenance and installation and
earned his Landscape Design Certificate and Associates
of Applied Science/Horticulture Degree from Front
Range Community College. Thomas’ experience and
technical skills include plant identification,
proper pruning practices for grasses, perennials,
ornamental trees and shrubs, irrigation repair,
spring cleanups, project supervision and project
management. Outside of work, Thomas enjoys triathalon
training/ events, and rock climbing. We hear he
is a pretty good violinist as well.
