A properly designed garden
will produce color and interest year round. We take
pride in designing and installing gardens that are attractive
through out the seasons. Trees, shrubs, ornamental grasses,
and boulders can provide structure, texture, and interest
during the cold months. Groundcovers and perennials
add color during their individual bloom times through
out the spring, summer, and fall. When planning your
garden, the maintenance requirements, water usage, seasonal
color, winter interest, and plant availability need
to be considered. All gardens require some level of
maintenance and we are happy to provide gardening and
maintenance services for you. We have a vested interest
in insuring the long term success of your garden.
“The River Rock – Xericscape Myth”-
A common myth prevails around gardens, low water usage,
and xericscape. River rock mulch on fabric has been
used for years as a “low maintenance xericscape” approach
to landscaping. Ironically, this method is a non –sustainable
approach. While we often will use river rock and fabric
for some shrub beds close to the foundation, and drainage
areas, the development of true garden is often undermined
by the use of such materials. Fabric and river rock
absorb and radiate heat from the sun which in turn can
stress plant material. Also, groundcovers and perennial
growth can be restricted. Eventually, river rock beds
collect enough organic debris that soil pockets are
formed above the fabric layer and weeds develop. This
is typically when the river rock is removed and hauled
off to the land fill. The cost of removing the material
can be more expensive than it was to install it. The
money and resources wasted, could have been spent developing
a sustainable long term garden. |
