A deck is sometimes a practical alternative
to a patio. When there are significant grade changes
and/or drainage issues, a deck can be a more affordable
and practical solution. When designing a deck and its
surroundings, we try to do what we can to integrate
the deck into the surrounding landscape. Too often,
we see existing decks that create a living space that
is completely and unnecessarily divorced from the landscape.
For example, a deck that sits within a few feet of the
ground might incorporate stone seat-walls and planters,
to eliminate the need for railings. Also, wide steps
can open up the transition between the deck and the
yard and create a stronger connection to the landscape.
